The Estonian National Museum together with the Information Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Estonia, the Estonian Academy of Arts and the Estonian Society of Blacksmiths will be staging a Nordic exhibition of smithery in Tartu, Estonia, in February-March 2004. The organizers have planned to invite participants - blacksmiths who keep alive the traditions of smithery as an applied art - from the countries in the Nordic region, including Estonia. The main aim of the exhibition is to show the modern developments of this ancient handicraft as a living art but also to compare it with the samples from the collections of museums.

The exhibition of the works executed by the participating smiths will be staged by the Estonian National Museum, which is situated in Tartu. The modern artistic part of the exhibition will be mounted in the main hall (176 sq m) of the Exhibition House of the museum. The minor halls (75 and 50 sq m, respectively) of the Exhibition House will be used for the historical part of the exhibition.

The main idea of the event is to give an overview of the main trends of smithery in the Nordic countries today, to collect information about the active blacksmiths and smithies in the Nordic region, and to exchange ideas about the future of smithery, which was historically a traditional handicraft and today is also a field of modern art.

In addition to the exhibition, a catalogue will be published containing short articles treating of the traditions of smithery, smithery as a living art, objects related to smithery in the museums, etc.; certainly photographs of the works of the participating smiths will be represented in the catalogue.

The organizers have the pleasure to announce the possibility for museums, societies and other organizations of blacksmiths but also the blacksmiths themselves to take part in the preparation of the exhibition. The participants in the exhibition will be chosen by a committee comprising the representatives of the Estonian National Museum, the Estonian Academy of Arts, the Estonian Society of Blacksmiths and the Information Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Estonia.
